The Girl at the Window

by Charlotte Green

She watched at the window, willing the cab to come around the corner.  Until it arrived, nothing had changed.  Only when it pulled up would she be able to take the next step.  She had agonised over the decision, relentlessly.  Every angle had been examined, every option considered, no stone left unturned in her mind.  It was so difficult to imagine life either way.  The certainty and comfort, tinged with inevitability and resignation, weighed up against the opportunity and independence that came with an almost crippling fear of the unknown.

The decision, in the end, after such anguish, floated into her consciousness as if it had always been there.  It came with a calmness that she had not felt in a long time.  It is sometimes the most obvious things that cause us the most concern, but when we whittle it down to basics, we know what to do.

Today, she knew what to do, and she was doing it.  Empowered by her decision, she waited patiently and impatiently for the cab.  When it came, changes would begin.  Until it came, there was peace in this moment.
